A lullaby in Tamil

Just a crazy thought ran over my mind and I made my mom write me a lullaby which she used to sing to me when I was a baby....I have posted the original tamil lyrics along with the English translation for the sake of those who don't know Tamil!

Disclaimer: For those who know Tamil really well....forgive me for the grammatical errors in the lyrics as I learnt writing Tamil on my own and not through formal education ;)

Theme: The theme of the song is a Mother singing to her baby, to make her sleep. The mother, who obviously is poor is singing to the baby of how gifted she is...

Translated in English:

O my dear one...

The cradle swings,
And the swan moves,
The swan is made of gold,
My Dear One, the jewels for you are of pearl...

Pearl or ruby,
My Dear one, a big pearl to adorn your face!

Why do you cry, did anyone hurt you?
Tell me their name, My Dear one,
Was it your aunt, who hurt you with a creeper of lily,
Was it your uncle, who hurt you with bouquet of jasmine...

Nobody did hurt you,
My Dear one, not even touched you..
You cry on your mother's lap, My Dear one,
Of hunger or sleep...

Go to sleep, My Dear one,
Like a painting in the cradle,
Cradle is of silk, My Dear one,
The swing is of ruby,
You who receives all these gifts, My Dear one,
Is a poor girl!

Are you the star in the sky, My Dear one,
Or the lightning in the clouds,
Are you the Golden Waters,
Which has come to quench my thirst..

Streams may go dry, my Dear one,
So may the seas and its green,
But, you have come to me, My Dear one,
As the gifted eternal spring!

Here's the bed of the King, my Dear one!
The spongy bed of the King,
On this royal bed,My Dear one,
You sleep like a parrot...

O My Royal one..
My Dear one,
Where were you all these days,
Like the Mother(Mary) who never gets angry,
You were on dome of the church!

There's the river Kaveri,
And there's Vailankaani in the middle,
Are you the one, My Dear one,
Who came playing with the Mother of Vailankaani!

Are you Mary's girl child,
Or her son himself?
Are you the child of God, my Dear one,
Or the Guardian of the Angels?

The church bell rings, My Dear one,
The priests are going to celebrate mass,
To help them with the mass,
You start now, My Dear one!

You are the Holy Cross, in the middle of the sea,
The path of the Saints (i guess)
The Mother of Sea, my Dear one,
Has given you to me...

To prove worthy of the gift, my Dear one!
Pray to Mary for her mercy..
To prove worthy of the gift, my Dear one!
Pray to Mary for her grace!

No, its not love...

Finally was able to pen the poem to completion over the weekend...this one is dedicated to viji..

From the time we met,we were far apart,
There was nothing in common, we knew we had to part,
For a moment it was bliss, when we strolled side by side,
Then the time came, and turned the tide..

We are walking away, to go our different ways,
Each one has got, our own dreams to chase,
There is nothing to mourn, or to cry,
There's nothing to regret, of the times gone by,

Still we turn to catch a glimpse,of the other walking away,
No words spoken,as there is nothing to say,
We can't see each other, after a while, in the twilight,
Yet for no reason, we turn to see, till we get out-of-sight!

Just a prelim..

There are a thousands things you wanna do when you are kid like reading books all day long, painting, poetry, playing in the rain, but as you grow up, all of that get reduced to a handful of activities, worse we get monotonous being stuck doing the same thing over and over habitually....

As a kid i loved to paint....but my engineering degree almost made my brain go devoid of art, of rain and may be good books as well :) Thankfully, now i am trying to re-live those days...I had started drawing a while ago, now am spending sufficient time pursuing that. I was very much pleased that i haven't lost the passion for it...

But to my surprise yesterday, the poetic side of me ebbed out...i came up with a really nice (others r welcome to comment once i post it) poem...i can't say how i came up with the theme( i too am not sure about it), though to some extent it was inspired by the song "I dreamed a dream" from Les Miserables. I heard the song sung beautifully by Susan Boyle and immediately started googling for the lyrics. The lyrics somehow touched me...and thus the poet in me (:P) has come up with a few lines of her own...

P.S: Poem to be posted soon ....
